Zombie vs Robot project X

I FINISHED IT. AND OMG I AM PROUD. It’s not perfect but come one it’s awesome anyway….

 Let us evaluate a little

Music – because I have the abillity to play the piano I recorded the music myself. I think this was the best solution in order to get it how its needed and so every piece of music didn’t have a different piano sound. I have added some echo to it and reverb to make it sound like it’s in the theatre. Also the other sound I got from http://www.freesound.org

I think that I did a good job with sound and can’t say bad thing about them.

Animation – I really tried make the movement of arms as different as possible. What I found out that in the future I have to think more about how I set up the atributes to control the limbs because really a lot depends on it. What is strange I found it much harder to animate robot arm, I just couldn’t make it more mechanic and precise…. With zombie was much easier but it wouldn’t hurt if it had more lets say random clumsy movement. I have to plan more and better in the future.

Expressing emotions – I tried to use all I could think of to get some emotions from them, but in the end it seems like I’ve ruined everything with the camera….

Camera – it seemed fine on the storyboard, and then it was a one big mess… I was very confused If I deleted some camera angles I had a feeling that the video is boring and If I added more it seemed chaotic…. I’m not sure but I think it’s matter of having a few days breake between animating and fitting the camera. I’ll try it out next time.

Build and textures – I love my arms… All the textures and faces… The look exactly how I wanted and I think they play their role well.

Background – Creating a theatre was one of the best ideas I had. It is so simple. just thre polygons and three textures but It looks so good

Wishes – I wish I added some rubish on the actuall scene to show better that the world is abandoned. I wish the lightning was better but it seemed like it refused to co-operate with me…. I wish I sould make arms move better and that I really chilled out with that camera…

I have to stil work on my organisation…

BUT ITS DONE. It looks kinda cool I think.

Oh oh and I asked for some feedback on “How To Become a Professional Animator” page on facebook and I got one coment but still better than nothing. Here it is.

“You nailed the dramatic buildup with getting ever faster until the climax and then resolve into silence.
There are some things i’d like to point out though.
First: If possible avoid complex camera movements. Just cut if you don’t have a specific reason for moving the camera.
Second: be wary of your colors and contrast in your render. sometimes the dark hand of the zombie has almost no contrast to the black of the piano
Third and more animation specific: I’ll just be bold and say that there are 2 human hands disguised as robot and zombie. They are not very distinct in their movement. For example the zombie could be very loose in its movement, while the robot would be very precise.

That said, I can see how this was a lot of work, and i encourage you to continue studying ;)”

Also I got the answer about my lightning problem which is

“about the lighting problems: My guess is that your textures and materials are too bright or dark to begin with. So on your next project keep the values away from super white/black.
If you really want something to be black, that would be done in postproduction”

but I dont really know how to do that sooo Andy prepare to show me how to do it haha

Achievements

Maya rendered the whole film in one night, and that’s a big WOW

The film is quite long but it has life in it

I really started understanding the program

Maya didn’t crashed even once on me (that’s a miracle)

I missed the deadline by a few hours…..

I survived the year.

Evaluation

The story – I really wanted the story to contain reall places and dates, also want it to contain the value of the slavic folklore. This subject is really wide and I feel like I could have made more research even thought I read so much about it through my life. Even though the story gives us the transformation of the main character from vindictive to simply couragous. There is a field for a little love story. The is los and unexpected kindness, and a monster of course there is a monster, and a princess. So it would seem there is everything a good fairytale needs.

Characters – Anastasia was of course based on real Anastasia which was brave and stubborn but also made everyone laugh.

Ilya’s character was based on the friend from my childhood. He wouldn’t say anything he would just do things, like some sort of good spirit waiting to catch you when you are falling down from the tree.

Raya – she was based on my geat grandmother or more my imagination of her cause I saw here when I was about 3 and I have those glimpses of not even memories but impressions of her. She was a really nice old lady.

Ssanin – the monster was based on always terrible Vladimir Lenin, in the eyes of many seen as a monster or a hero…

I tried to keep the character simple  cause I have tendency to overcomplicating things….

Desings – My attempt was to imitate Ivan Bilibin’s illustrations and I think I got it. It might have looked better if I drawned the character manualy cause I found it hard to give colours this dirty heavy shade, nothing can replace real manual skills. The only thing I have to say about that is.

“Having started out as a drawing animator, Jim Richardson, now a computer animator, told me that when he first switched over to the computer, he found it was like ‘ANIMATING WITH A MICROWAVE’.”

I went a bit over 800 words but I’m sure I would fit it in to a 5 minutes live pitch without a problem.

What to improve: I deffinitely have to work on story telling, I find myself mssing words or being completely lost in the story. Try to analyse characters from different angles to improve the knowledge and understanding of the characters actions. I have to draw even more thought I can se an improvement already. And again time management is my enemy. I am buying myself a calendar for next year.

In the end I would like to watch that film.

I hope you enjoyed the story.

STANDARD VERSION

THE STORY

The story is much different from the original feature film. The reason for this is the fact that Anastasia (1997) is simply too American, bereft of Russian spirit and folklore, there is none of the beauty of Eastern animation in it. Because this is a story about a Russian Princess, I find it to be more fitting for it to take the form of a traditional Russian folklore tale, in the style of old Eastern Europe animation. The product is aimed at a wide audience but only the older generations will understand the actual meaning of the story.

STORY

The Royal family has been captured and imprisoned by the evil monster Ssenin. After a few months, he decided to slaughter the Romanovs family but the youngest Princess managed to escape in the cover of the pitch black night. Running through the woods, she came across a simple woman and her son who were coming back home after a whole day of work at the fish market. They saw how terrified she was, so they offered her shelter. She wanted to leave the next day as she was afraid that she would bring a terrible fate to the village but it seemed that no one had recognized her, so there was hope that Ssenin wouldn’t find her there. The old woman Raya and her son Ilya had quickly noticed that she was no ordinary girl, so she told them the truth. They hadn’t told her secret to anyone so she stayed in the village. Every month, the well-being of the village and the country was falling.

The monstrous usurper was a vicious ruler. He would eat five children for breakfast and raise taxes everyday. Ilya helped the princess come up with a plan to kill Ssanin and after 6 years of hiding she left the village in the the night. Moving through the country, she saw many horrible things that happened, because of Ssanin, that changed her… The journey wasn’t to avenge her family, it was to save the people and the country. Even though Ilya promised to stay home, he was following her all the way to Saint Petersburg where she spotted him at the market. He knew someone working in the palace that helped them to get hired there. One day, she heard one of the cooks complain that she has to read Ssanin books every evening and she would really rather go to sleep. She proposed to swap places with an excuse that she would love to read all the books in the palace but she’s not allowed to touch them. From this time every evening, she would go in to the ball room, that Ssanin had made his lair, and she would read. The monster really liked her voice and had soon fell to trust her and sometimes she could swear that he was closing his eyes and having a little nap. One winter evening she brought with her a thin long needle-like sword hid underneath her coat. She read the book, as always, and, as always, she saw Ssanin closing his eyes. Silently, she got up and moved across the room towards the monster’s head. His breath stank of blood. She retrieved the sword, she raised it up but then a big red eye opened and the monster’s head was already 3 meters above her. He spoke that he knew that she would come back and that now it is time for her to die. Had it not have been for Ilya, she would have died but he had shot the monster in the eye and then she cut off his head.

Anastasia became the Queen of Russia and ruled it until she passed away as a very old lady. And of course Ilya stayed with her. The happy ending is necessary, since it’s the complete reversal of the real event.

STYLE

The film should be made as a 2d animation, strongly based on the style of Eastern Europe animation from around the 1950’s, with very strong illustration and flowery, fairytale backgrounds. The character should be simple but with dirtied colouring and dark strokes. The animation itself should imitate the swiftness of the Eastern Europe animation but should be smoother as with modern animations.

The main example of this style is the Russian Illustrator Ivan Bilibin who was fascinated with dark Slavic folklore and lived in the same time period as Anastasia Romanowa.

And an example of the Russian animation I propose is: The Scarlet Flower (1952), which holds the beautiful backgrounds and the magical movement of the characters.

For the music I propose compositions of Tchaikovsky or Grieg which are inseparable from Russian animation.

FORMAT

This story should have the form of an animated feature film. There is a space to create a TV series afterwards but the main story should be shown in one piece, so it was easier to absorb and feel as though it’s partially based on a real event. Also I’m afraid that if it was a TV series, it would lose on quality.

CHARACTERS

a

Anastasia Romanova, The youngest of the princesses.

After escaping the monster who slaughtered her whole family, she promises to avenge them. For six years she hides in the village, planning to slay the monster. On the journey to Saint Petersburg, her eyes see very terrible things and she changes. She decides that the most important thing of all is to free her people and take good care of the country. She has a very strong character and thinks that she is capable of doing everything by herself.

b

Ilya Mirov, the only son of Raya.

Every day at sunrise, he goes out to fish and then joins his mother on the fish market where they spend the whole day. He’s bright (and can read, which isn’t very common in the village), strong and he’s genuinely a good lad. He finds all the girls in the village dumb & boring until he meets Anastasia. Of course, he has a crush on her. He knows that there is no way in Hell that he could marry a Princess but he still follows her all the way to the Saint Petersburg and helps her slay the monster.

c

Raya Mirov, a widow. Has only one son, Ilya.

After her husband died at sea, she was forced to work all day to keep the house and her son in good health. She’s not as old as you would think. Also, she doesn’t understand why her son is still not married. She helps Anastasia because she always wanted to have a daughter. She really doesn’t want her to leave but she knows that nothing can stop her.

d

Ssenin, evil, monstrous snake with bat wings, long fangs and blood red lizard eyes.

A vicious creature, his only dreams and aspirations are death and misery. He likes to kill for fun and listen to screams of terror. Kills the Romanov family because he’s an asshole and just wants to have a kingdom of terror. He let little Anastasia run away just for fun and for some reason he likes bad romance novels.

PLOT

Russian Royal Family gets slaughtered by a terrible monster. The youngest of the Princesses manages to escape and finds shelter in the village nearby. After six yeats of hiding she heads to Saint Petersburg to slay the monster who killed her family. On her way there, the amount of terrible things she sees changes her and now she just wants to free her people from their horrible future. And there is a boy who follows her.

SYNOPSIS

A story about a girl who wants to avenge her family but soon realises that it’s better to be a saviour than a regular monster slayer.

More inspirations

I thought about one more artist that I’m inspired by in this project (and all the time)

Ilya Repin (1844-1930)

one of the most magnificent Ukrainian painters. Also lived in the same time as Romanov’s family. He was also Bilibin’s teacher.

Animating is much more difficult than I expected…. Im not sure now if it was a good idea to choose playing piano… I mean it looks alright but not how I imagined…

I rendered the first scene just to see how will it look like

I think Ill have to ad more lights cause in some moments zombie arm is nearly

black….bloody lights…

Ohe yeah I forgot to post last time. When I was trying to make a texture for the stool I accidentaly made something that looks like snow…

Explenation

I had  trouble in deciding which way to go to show the story. To make it realistic and use real human form of Lenin or to go in to a fairytale. After many days and asked questions for the opinion of others I decided to change him in to a monster and give him a similar sounding name. I think that in this way the story is less brutal so younger audience would be also able to watch the film. And in the way makes it more interesting, for some people can guess themselves that the fairytale monster is the real monster, and fun for others to find out in a different way, through internet or from someone else.

Ilya’s name – I’ve chosen this name couse is Russian and I simply like it.

Raya-s name – it’s the name of my great grandmother.

Looking for the style

Straight away I thought about Ivan Bilibin (1872-1042) one of the most known russian illustrators

He was highly inspired by a dark slavic folklore and creating in a form of Art Nouveau. Also he lived in the same time as Romanov’s family, which makes him a perfect persona to be inspired by.

The examples of russian animations from around 1950’s which also present the style I’d like to follow

Zombie vs Robot project X

I have recorded sounds! The are not perfect but stil awesome!

I have recorded all the pieces from the list because I will be able to decide which ones to chose after puting them together.

So after a bit of playing with them I decided to choose:

Both Hands

Moonlight Sonata – L.V.Beethoven

Left Hand

Toccata et fugue – J.S.Bach

In The Hall Of The Mountain King – E.Grieg

Right Hand

The Blue Danube – Johann Strauss

Hungarian Rhapsody – F.Liszt

Rondo Alla Turca – W.A.Mozart

Animating to the sound turned out not to be as terrible as I imagined but its still alot of hastle

The look of arms
