DIALOGUE, ACTION AND INTERACTION – project III

IDEA, STORY & SCRIPT vol.I

IDEA

I decided to create a story without beginning and real ending. I want it to be like an episode from the series in which every episode continues one main thread story while adding side ones. I think it’s a good idea since I have aspirations for more complex story this time and if I tried to picture the whole story in this one project I wouldn’t have enough time to do so.

pearl2

Our main characters are: Pearl the girl just an ordinary girl and Kat the cat who has 9 weird heart shaped spots on his back. They are friends. Although Kat is more anthropomorphic than a normal cat no one really notices it(even Pearl) cause he’s just a cat. Everything changes when Pearl goes to sleep, in her dreams Kat is always in there, he can also talk (like a really well educated man) and interact with her as if he was a human. In the world of dreams everything is possible and indeed anything can happen. After Pearl wakes up she can never really remember dreams properly. She’s aware that Kat appears in them, but his human complexion seems to vanish and so does the memory of fighting monsters and everything unusual. She’s just a normal girl who loves her cat. And he’s totally not a normal cat and he is trying to save the girl from all evil which for a secret reason doesn’t want to leave her alone. (I left a really big window for a back story, I’m kind of proud of it)

STORY

Pearl and Kat are in a dream. This time dream world is all black. Pearl doesn’t want to do anything and says she is cold. Kat decides it’s time to fix it and takes her to the place where her heart lives. Unfortunately Kat’s fears come true and Pearl’s heart is all frozen by the time they get there. He tells her to create (think of something) something to melt the ice, but she’s to slow as if the ice also froze her brain and the frozen heart evolves in to the monster. Kat in order to give Pearl some time throws himself at the monster while the girl suppose to think of nice things to make the heart move again. But she is thinking about the wrong things. By the time she finally gets it, Kat is really hurt. She thinking about the day she met him and the ice breaks, pieces scattering around. One of them is flying strait at the girl. With the last strength Kat throws himself in front of Pearl and takes the hit. Darkness. Pearl wakes up screaming/crying after a while she suddenly stops because she finally realises that Kat is perfectly fine and asleep in the bottom of the bed. She goes back to sleep. One of the Kat’s heart shaped spots vanishes. He winks in to the camera.

The Audience

I am aiming for a broad audience. I would set the age barrier 6+ but I am unsure if kids this year will be able to understand what is happening.

Research Vol. II

I decided to do my own research in order to gain some more inspiration for this project.

I want the story for this project to be more interesting than all the ones I made before. I will try to make it more complicated (but not overdo it), unusual and make the topic more serious. I also want the animation itself to look finished and professional as much as one person can do, compared to the experienced animators teams.

Bee and Puppycat

“Bee is a cheerful young woman in her twenties who is habitually fired from menial, low-paying jobs. On her way home from a failed job opportunity, PuppyCat, a strange, mysterious creature, falls from the sky. She takes him in and, when he sees that she is broke and unemployed, PuppyCat teleports himself and Bee to an alternate dimension where they are given a job by TempBot, a gigantic, intelligent television screen. Despite the dangers that this line of temporary jobs would pose, Bee finds that she has a talent for the work and that it pays well enough for her to disregard the dangers. An ongoing plot element of the series is PuppyCat’s past, which is shrouded in mystery. There are hints that he may be a space outlaw who was transformed into a monster by the Space King, who was angry over the pirate’s romance with his daughter. Another ongoing plot element is Bee’s romantic feelings for her friend Deckard, a talented chef who seems to harbor a crush on Bee but finds that this complicates his decision to pursue a cooking career.” (Reference 1)

As the first and most important reference for this project I chose Bee and Puppycat since  for the last few months its been something I watch constantly.

I find the story very refreshing and interesting, you can’t easily predict what will happen but it still kind of makes sense in the end. Plus the episodes are pretty short so there is a skill in that too. I also really like the mixed style of Japanese and Western animation. I think it gives it an interesting look. Characters are not overly complicated but have enough detail, they are likeable and funny. To me, they seem easy to relate to. Backgrounds vary from simple to detailed, depending on needs.

Star vs. the Forces of Evil

Star Butterfly is a magical princess from the dimension of Mewni. On her 14th birthday, she receives the family heirloom wand. After she accidentally sets fire to her castle, her parents decide that a safer option is to send her to Earth as a foreign exchange student. She befriends Marco Diaz and lives with his family while attending Echo Creek Academy. Star and Marco must deal with everyday school life while protecting Star’s wand from falling into the hands of Ludo, a villain from Mewni who commands an army of monsters. Star and the folks from Mewni are able to travel across dimensions using “dimensional scissors” that can open portals. (Reference 2)

The first time I saw a trailer for this cartoon, I couldn’t wait to see it and it didn’t disappoint me. The first episode of Star vs. the Forces of Evil showed the story of my first days in the UK haha so, honestly, I could not relate more (btw. A few weeks ago after finally watching it, my friend Maria said that Star and myself are disturbingly alike. I take that as a compliment).

Star is a fun, crazy girl. I find her character very unpredictable but still likeable. She could be friends with anyone and she’s always doing something fun. Her deign is simple, full western style with a hint of Sailor Moon (Usagi Tsukino is also on my list) – the wand. Backgrounds are simple.

Over the Garden Wall

The series follows two half-brothers, Wirt and Greg, who become lost in a strange forest called the Unknown. In order to find their way home, the two must travel across the apparently magic forest with the occasional help of the wandering, mysterious and elderly Woodsman and Beatrice, an irritable bluebird who travels with the boys in order to find a woman called Adelaide, who can supposedly undo the curse on Beatrice and her family and show the half-brothers the way home. (Reference 3)

I chose this cartoon because Wirt always reminds me of my old friend Filip (I get attached to things which remind me of things) and also because it’s much darker than all the others. More serious. While other cartoons, even when they have some scary moments,  are still mainly just silly, this one can definitely make you feel uncomfortable in your chair.

The design of the characters is modern but there is something vintage about them. Backgrounds are detailed, some are very pretty. Everything is dark and melancholic. The story is very mysterious and everything doesn’t really makes sense until the end of the show.

Sailor Moon

(yuk English dubbing….)

In Minato, Tokyo, a middle-school student named Usagi Tsukino befriends Luna, a talking black cat that gives her a magical brooch enabling her to become Sailor Moon: a pretty soldier destined to save Earth from the forces of evil. Luna and Usagi assemble a team of fellow Sailor Soldiers to find their princess and the Silver Crystal. (Reference 5)

Sailor Moon was my most favourite cartoon when I was a child. I always thought that the moment of transformation was beautiful (rainbow colours and sparkles really got me),

plus I dreamed of a talking cat of my own (actually I dreamed about any cat at all…)

Sailor Moon is just fun. Usagi Tsukino is a cry baby who gets upset very easily but has a big heart and Luna is a very modest cat who is having troubles accepting what an oaf Usagi can be. Even thought the story can be predictable the humour and emotions save the outcome. Characters are designed more realistically as well as backgrounds.

*****

All together I’m slowly starting to form the whole idea for this project. It probably will be about a girl and her cat/dog?  And there will be some evil (probably) monster. Character designs will have to be simple since I only have one set of hands but maybe I could try to play with some detailed backgrounds. And the story has to be interesting. I’ll try to make it unusual.

DIALOGUE, ACTION AND INTERACTION – project III

Research Vol. I

ZOOTOPIA

To live like cat and dog or maybe to live like bunny and the fox? When you think about mortal enemies this connection is unavoidable. In Zootopia we see many mortal enemies working together but these ones are most precious. In order to save the city from the plague of natural instinct Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde just have to get over the differences. After a long journey of mocking each other and everything going wrong in the end we can see that thieving fox and a tiny cute bunny make a really good team and that’s exactly because they are so different.

I really like the interaction between them two. It really looks logical, it’s not forced. Everything seems very well thought and just looks natural. Also facial expressions are awesome. (btw I really like this film, JUST LOOK AT THE FUUUUURRRRR)

TANGLED

In Tangled we can talk about Flynn Rider and Maximus relation or Flynn and Rapunzel

In the Flynn/Rapunzel relation we have a girl forcing a boy to take her out. Which he has to do if he ever wants to see his treasure again. While on the journey Flynn being mean is awfully trying to convince RRapunzel that she should just get back home but then he realises that he’s kind of tired of being the bad guy and decides to help instead.

In the Flyyn/Maximus relation we have a thieve and a guard dog I mean horse who is trying to catch the villain. They both hate each other, they are both extremely different and yet they come to cooperate in order to save the girls live.

THE BIG SNIT

This really wacky animation is a perfect example for a typical family conflict. The obstacle doesn’t really matter, everything is an equally enormous problem for the two characters, Nuclear War = Scrabble game conflict but what annoyes them the most are the weird habits they both have. The strange way of truly overcoming them is just simple dying. How crude

BLIP

This is a really simple example. Two characters want to paint the world in to their favourite colour. One blue and the other one red. It becomes a real big problem until by accident they realise that together they create something much more interesting a new wonderful purple colour. So they decide to pain the world a new colour together.

***

With this starting research I realised how useful this project is. Nearly every animated feature is based on team work which changes the relation between characters or just regular teamwork.  It is good to realise that in order to enhance skill of creating interesting stories.

DIALOGUE, ACTION AND INTERACTION – project III

project

In this project again we are expected to use 2D and 3D animation. I was thinking about trying to do more 2D stuff this time and only a little bit of 3D since I feel like in the last project I didn’t really present my drawings skills how I would like to. But to be honest I still don’t know how it will end up.

I am still planning to design my own characters since I would like to feel more comfortable with that process. This also means building and rigging the 3D version of the characters in Maya but practising is always good. I also believe that this time I will manage to do it much faster and will have more time for animating. (Since I’m planning to animate most of it in 2D it makes more sense to design everything on my own than getting a pre-rigged character and then trying to copy it in to 2D).

With this project I will try to aim high. I want it to look like a 100% finished animation which I could proudly add to my portfolio and in order to do that I will try to finish animating the characters early enough to work on the mood busting environment and all the little nice things.
