KAT’s re-rig

My Kat’s rig was wrong. I mean it was totally fine in general it just wasn’t right for what I needed it to do (but at least I had a little more rigging practise).

My 1st rig was made as if he was suppose to move like a person and that is correct but the only 3D scene in which we can see him is Kat sleeping on the bed like a cat, curled up in a ball. And it was impossible to do this with the 1st rig. At first I tried setting up the rig in the closes position to the one needed and then adding blend shapes but it didn’t worked out well (at one point the whole rig refused to cooperate at all….).  That’s when I decided to re-rig the Kat. In order to do that I had to unbind skin and change the build of the model to this one.

Then I partially reused the controllers I made for the previous fig and put the new bones in.

Once more I had to paint the shin weights but it went smooth, and then I had to add a few blend shape adjusting the neck when he twisted his head.

I know it’s not perfect, but it looks fine in the camera, and that’s what matters the most at this point.

I personally think its a GOOD PROBLEM SOLVING.

MAYA RIGGING

This time rigging went easy. Although one more time I was not able to use interactive skin bind and I had to paint on the skin weights (for both characters), but this also went quickly.

I decided to make only necessary blend shapes for Kat and Pearl since I don’t want to waste time (maybe I’ll make some more after submitting the project).

Kat’s only 3D facial expressions we can see in this project are sleeping and this one.

Meet the Frozen Heart Monster

Inspirations

I wanted the ice to look realistic and glossy but those Images helped me a little to understand how to make it look like I want.

The monster part just appeared in my head and I can’t think of anything that I could use as a real reference.

While texturing Pearl I had a problem with texturing the hair (btw I don’t know why hands decided to become pink. In render view they are a perfectly skinny colour). I wanted to achieve the ‘natural’ light reflection on them so I couldn’t use the any of the normal materials. I have tried using all of the Hair materials provided by Maya/Arnold but I would end up with this not smooth surface after rendering it out.

anrold1 After consulting with Andy he suggested using aiStandard with noise bumpmap and this is the result. I think it looks even better.

I did not use any references for this room. It was just like furnishing the room in The Sims. And the pig is a tribute to Waddles from Gravity Falls.

Building Pearl’s hair was an absolute nightmare (maybe because it was the first time and its just a smooth cloud) that’s why I decided not to care about the back of it. Since there are no shots in which we will be able to see her back. Other than this everything was pretty easy. I think I actually have enough edge everywhere this time and I placed them even, so rigging should go smoothly..
