WORDS & PICTURES – project IX

Its ready!

To start with I don’t know why is there some sort of weird line in the middle of the screen. There was nothing like this on my computer…

The sound

Nothing more nothing less. In my opinion sound is very good. Everything is understandable, there is a phone silence noise and everything has the right timing loudness an meaning.

Animating

I should explain why everything is different. On the beginning I wanted to stick with very uniform design. But soon I realised that it is really boring and my conversation is not short, this is when I decided to make a mishmash and try to use different technique for every sentence. In order to make the video less messy I decided to assign one chosen font for a person, and tired to stick to the colours unless it was necessary to change it.

The fonts

I used Adamas-regular for Eve in light blue colour because she is very sad really and her existence is very unstable.

For Sharon I used Castellar-regular in light violet colour, I choose this font beacue it’s elegan so it suits a representant of the company and the shade because this character really makes me think of one girl who’s name is also Sharon and that’s her favourite colour. Also I thought that it will fit because it is neutral.

The blob

The idea was that the blob suppose to suggest the phone signal travelling through the phone lines. I’m not sure if it’s clear thought… But I was really happy when I made it. It’s such a nice bloby blob…

Judgement

I have asked a group of people to look at my video and give me a feedback. This evaluation is a mixture of the things I think and also what I was told that it’s not right. Some things I can’t see but I guess I wouldn’t because I spend a lot of time staring at it and everything seems obvious enough to me…

I think that one of the things that are wrong is the speed of everything. Because there are thoughts of two persons and those thoughts are very different to the speech the video becomes to chaotic. I probably should have sticked to one person.

Some parts of the sentences disappear way to fast and they are impossible to read.

The fonts I have chosen weren’t a good choice in the end. They seem to be hard to read.

Some people laughed at sausage jokes, some found them horrible.

Most of the people said that even thought its hard to concentrate on everything it does bring out the message.

The blob was understood by a few but most of them wasn’t really bothered about it’s meaning.

Some people liked the ‘cheap arcade look’ of the specific pieces, and some did’t know If that was on purpose…

The judgement on the sound was even. It came across as very plastic and stressful, so goal achieved.

Other than this (what is actually really important…) I think that the way that sizes and colours change helps to express the feelings pretty well. Also I am quite proud of some of the effects I managed to make like the ice <3, I think that the moment when the big white LIES appears on the red background is quite good looking and suitable. I wanted to make things batter so much that I ended up making it worse…

I do realise that the final look is far from perfect, but this was a quick exercise and there was no time to fix things, definitely no time to write the script again and rerecord it (I was considering this…). It definitely shows that I have learned a lot about kinetic typography and using after effects. I start to feel really comfortable in this software. I promise the next thing I’ll make in it will be AWESOME.

WORDS & PICTURES – project IX

The script.

I decided to stick with the idea of the phone call which is a invitation to the job interview. This is very fresh case to me because it happened to me a few days ago, so I’m in the zone.

I want to record a ordinary conversation in I AM SO NICE AND AMAZING style and make a typography animation that reveals the true thoughts.

I decided to go away a bit from this reference which I am choosing to be my guide.

I am planning my thoughts not to be different from the words just with a few signs. I want to have a whole different thoughts. like when you pretend that you are listening to someone and say yes or now or whatever you say but really you are just thinking what are you gonna have for dinner.

Sound recording

Me and Maria went to the sound-boot to record our dialogues.

It was hilarious. We spend in there about an hour and most of it was laughing and not being able to say anything.

I loved it.

Main script

talking

Guiding Maria

I gave Maria the script but I didn’t expect her to exactly follow what is written on it. I wanted the conversation to feel real. In the end everyone has a different way of expressing themselves and I believed in her ability to do so.

I was right she did great and I think I did great as well. Obviously we have natural talent in being fake, plastic and annoying.

The script part II.

Because I didn’t have much time to prepare the script before recording, I had only the talking part ready. I think it was actually a good thing. Thanks to this I had a possibility to listen to the recording and thinking of suitable thoughts.

The second part of the script changed a lot. I ended up with two. First one was very depressing and the second was very silly. To keep the golden mean I just blended them together.

Playing with sound

Because my idea is just a phone call it was really easy to do. All the special sounds in the audio come from https://www.freesound.org/

The tutorial I used to make the phone call effect

Now its time to animate!

WORDS & PICTURES – project IX

The idea of job interview happened to recorded a few times. But it also happens that the idea of a funny job interview was recorded by a few amazing artists, those examples don’t have much to do with typography but they helped me get in the right place to start writing my script.

I really like the idea of recording a job interview, I guess many of us had the pleasure of going through this nightmare – fake smiles, gigantic self-esteem, pretty sentences, and all the little lies about how inhuman we are.

LIES LIES LIES

Now lets go back to typography.

Someone has put a lot of effort to make this video interesting without actually making anything fancy. Anyone who saw FIGHT CLUB would say that this video presents the climate very accurate. Good colours, good letters.

In this video everything seems very twitchy and glitchy, rushed, violent even. Also the music is very disturbing. It has really strong message to give and it does it’s job.

I find this video very useful. I like the idea of connecting letters with the meaning of particular words or the way they have been said. I might be able to do something like this with my project.

I like the idea of using simple drawings from time to time and I might try to find a place for it in my video. In this video again I like giving words the nature of its meaning, e.g when NOSE is getting bigger it makes me of the moment when nostrils are getting wider, and the easy HEART disappearing and appearing in the rhythm.

WORDS & PICTURES – project IX

I started with watching references from the brief, and I can’t stop being surprised. How much you can do with just a font! AMAZING!

***********************************************************************

This one is really simple. Kept in black&white, one clear font, words simply sliding in to their place, rhythmical, simple camera movement, more important words articulated with bigger font size. Nothing fancy really, but it fits perfectly. While the words appear on the screen they are slowly creating one big word ‘language’ which we can see at the end, it is a great idea because the whole speech is about language.

***********************************************************************

This video has not only typography but also drawings. I think it is good to do something like that if you are trying to sell a product to someone or if you are trying to make your students more interested in the boring subject that they have to learn about. It does it’s job but I don’t think it is applicable to our brief. Even though some of the words appear in speech bubbles or have a different colour they don’t really stand out.I guess hand writing technique could be useful If I wanted to be the only person speaking in my project. Or maybe if I was telling a story.

***********************************************************************

This is the last example from the brief and I liked it very much. It is dramatic, funny, and it feels really familiar. I think that the background perfectly expresses the void of the phone line and the noisy silence that you can here when nobody is on the other side. The words just pop out out of nowhere just like the words on the phone cause you cant see the other person mouth. The colours are well chosen. Mother should be green because she will love you anyway and she should be calm. Red colour for Sarah because ‘it’s all her fault’. Purple for Darren because main character is on the edge with him.Blue for Victoria cause she is a side problem really.White colour for the main character is good because he is the most important, and its the best on the black background, orange was a good choice to show Phils anger because red was already taken and he also didn’t seem to be that bothered. The fact that the font often says the ACTUAL truth instead of the lies we can hear, is humorous and fresh, also it brings the feeling that we know how it is.

The pieces in between phone calls looking like the ends of the old camera film, also a good choice, makes me think of the end of something but I don’t know how does it work on people who have never seen an old analogue camera film…)

***********************************************************************

I really like the last film and I will try to go that way.

I have this idea about recording job interview. I have to think more about it.

WORDS & PICTURES – project IX

This quick exercise should help me understand how to use size, colour and movement of font to express wanted emotion. I think it is very useful because even if on the beginning it seems a bit boring and unnecessary actually it is very useful. The power of typography is used in almost everything, from posters, through clothes and ending on film credits.

I like playing with fonts so I think I’ll enjoy this project.

‘Kinetic typography—the technical name for “moving text”—is an animation technique mixing motion and text to express ideas using video animation. This text is presented over time in a manner intended to convey or evoke a particular idea or emotion.’ 1*
